The house has fantastic views all around, from the Montagne de Lure, to the Luberon mountain, to the dramatic hill-top village of Viens 2 miles away.

We call it the real Provence because this is not the Luberon where the tour buses come - La Jauberte is a few miles along the valley from the popular villages of Gordes, Menerbes and Roussillon. Here the hill-top villages of Viens, Caseneuve and Cereste are on the road less travelled, but no less delightful.

La Jauberte is a cultural experience in its own right, over 400 years old and full of character - time-worn stone floors, beamed ceilings, antique furniture - but also very comfortable, with modern appliances like high-speed internet, satellite TV, and high-quality mattresses. There are 4 bedrooms sleeping 8, although one is a walkthrough bedroom so the maximum is 6 adults plus 2 children.

The gardens are arranged over different levels and are lovingly designed and planted - waves of vegetation give year-round interest, and you are encouraged to cut your own flowers for bouquets. Some of the scents you’ll experience: rosemary, lavender, santolina, wild thyme, artemisias and over 50 roses.

There are several outside spots for eating and relaxing as the mood takes you: a balcony off the living room, a vine-shaded terrace below, various garden levels and trees to set out a table and chairs amid the glorious sights and fragrances, and generally live the good life. Click here for more on the garden.

La Jauberte is part of three houses on the same property. The other two are the owners' and the caretaker. The owners are a couple who are in residence about half the year. You do not need to see them at all, or you can tap them for advice on local activities, cycle rides and hikes, it is up to you. The pool is shared with the owners, but you have the priority.

All of the rental income the owners receive from La Jauberte is donated to UNICEF, the international aid agency for children.
